eHealth & COBRA

If you're leaving the company, eHealth helps you weigh COBRA against an individual or family plan, and shop across carriers in one place.

Cost to you
Free — no charge for the service

What it covers

Subsidies you may qualify for

Eligibility is based mainly on income, but also family size and local insurance costs. Subsidies are only available on plans bought through government exchanges.

How to use it

Timing

Open Enrollment in most states runs from November 1 into mid-January, with a mid-December cut-off for coverage starting January 1. Dates shift year to year and some states set their own — confirm the current deadline with eHealth.

Outside that window you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event — losing employer insurance, having or adopting a child, marriage or divorce, or a permanent move.

What it costs

The eHealth service is free and carries no obligation to enroll. You pay only the premium of whatever plan you choose.

Who's eligible

Anyone leaving the company, or anyone buying their own health insurance rather than getting it through an employer or government program.
