Voluntary BenefitsSupplemental Coverage
Three voluntary policies through Sun Life that pay cash directly to you, on top of your medical plan — Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity.
- Carrier
- Sun Life
- Cost
- 100% employee paid
- Phone
- (800) 247-6875
- Paid to
- You, directly — not the provider
- Child coverage
- To age 26
- Wellness screening
- $50 per covered person, once a year
How these work
These are not health insurance. Your medical plan pays doctors and hospitals; these policies pay cash to you when something covered happens, and you spend it on whatever you like — the deductible, lost income, childcare, travel, or the mortgage.
- They pay in addition to any other coverage you have.
- Benefits go directly to you, not to the provider.
- Accident and Critical Illness each include a $50 wellness screening benefit, once per benefit year.
- Child coverage runs to age 26 on all three.
The dental link worth knowing about
The Sun Life dental plan is integrated with these policies. If you get your teeth cleaned at a participating provider and you carry Accident or Critical Illness cover, you automatically receive a $50 payment for each — no claim form. If you hold both, that is $100 a year for a cleaning you were having anyway.
Tax note: if any of the cost is paid on a pre-tax basis, some or all of a benefit payment may be reported as taxable income on a Form 1099.
Accident Insurance
Pays when you, your spouse or your child has a covered accident — at work, at home or anywhere else (24-hour coverage). No health questions and no pre-existing condition limitations.

The full schedule also covers fractures and dislocations, burns, lacerations, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, prosthetics and dental repair. Fracture and dislocation amounts differ depending on how the injury is treated, so check your Certificate.
Life and dismemberment amounts shown are for the employee. Spouse benefits are 100% of the employee amount; dependent children 50%.
Critical Illness Insurance
Pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a covered condition. No medical questions when you first elect.

Things worth knowing
- Recurrence benefit — if you're diagnosed with the same condition twice and 12 months have passed between diagnoses, an additional benefit is payable on eligible conditions.
- More than one condition — payable, provided at least 6 months separate the diagnoses.
- Pre-existing conditions — no benefit is paid if you're diagnosed within 12 months of coverage taking effect (or of an increase) for anything you sought treatment for in the 3 months beforehand.
- Enrolling later — if you don't elect when first eligible, or you want to increase coverage, you may need to complete health questions for Sun Life's approval.
- Includes access to health care support services — experts you can talk to about diagnosis, treatment options and coverage.
Hospital Indemnity Insurance
Pays when you, your spouse or your child is admitted to hospital. Guaranteed issue — no medical questions.
| Benefit | Amount | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| First day hospital confinement | $1,500 / day | 1 day |
| Hospital confinement (standard room) | $200 / day | Up to 30 days |
| ICU confinement | $200 / day | Up to 10 days |
| Wellness screening | $50 | 1 per person per year |
These stack. A first-day admission into intensive care can pay the first-day, confinement and ICU benefits for the same day.
What triggers a payment
- Sickness
- Accidents (within 365 days of the accident)
- Routine pregnancy
- Complications of pregnancy
- Newborn complications
- Mental and nervous disorders
- Substance abuse
Newborns: a stay in the neonatal intensive care unit is covered. A routine newborn stay is not.
File a claim within 30 days of a covered stay, or as soon as reasonably possible.
